Velas is coastal village which falls in the Ratnagiri district. The place is well known for its beach which reflect nature in its best preserved and pristine form. It is noted as a birthplace of Nana Phadnis. He was sachiva- a secretary in Peshawai. It is also famous for its beaches and turtle festival which is held by the local people of Velas and Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra during the period of February – March. Hundreds of Olive Ridley Turtles, one of the most treasured species of marine turtles, come ashore at Velas beach for breeding and lay hundreds of eggs. Thousands of travellers visit the Velas beach in order to witness baby turtles.
