Shivneri Fort
 
 

Shivneri Fort is one of the prime historical and tourist attraction in Maharashtra. It provides an emotional and historical connect with the place where the great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born. Shivneri was fortified powerful fort having very strong architecture and when Jijabai was in her pregnancy, she was sent to Shivneri by Shahjiraje for safety. The Shivneri fort hosts a temple of goddess Shivai Devi. Jijabai had taken a vow to keep a fast in respect of Shivai Devi. She also vowed that in case she gives birth to a son, she will to name him after the revered goddess. Shivaji Maharaj was born here on 19th February 1630 and also lived here for his first six years. Being Shivaji Maharaj's birth place, Shivjayanti – his birth festival is celebrated here with great celebration. The house where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born was reconstructed in 1925 and is known as the Shiv Mandir. In addition there is temple called Shivakunja with statues of Bal Shivaji and Jijabai is marvelous and breathtaking. The complete fort with its seven protecting gates structures are now renovated and the fort is in best condition as in the old period. The gardens on the route are well developed and the fort has all facilities. Visiting Shivneri is an amazing experience.
