Sawantwadi was formerly the capital of the Sawantwadi State ruled by the Sawant Bhonsle royal clan of the Marathas. The palace of Maharaja of Sawantwadi is still in a good condition. In Swantwadi most of houses are made up of red stones and slide roof specially built for rainy season. Most of population dependent on farming and fishing.
