Sawantwadi was formerly the capital of the Sawantwadi State ruled by the Sawant Bhonsle royal clan of the Marathas. The palace of Maharaja of Sawantwadi is still in a good condition. In Swantwadi most of houses are made up of red stones and slide roof specially built for rainy season. Most of population dependent on farming and fishing. Nearby area is covered by dense rainforests and suitable inhabitat for wild animals like leopard, wild cats, wild hen. Sawantwadi is known for its colourfully painted wooden toys, handicrafts, hand-made cards.
