The Pench Tiger Reserve  gets its name from its life line - the River Pench. Pench River flows, north to south, 74 km through the reserve.  Pench Tiger Reserve  is one of the premier tiger reserves of India and the first one to straddle across two states – Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. On the Maharashtra side, the Pench Tiger Reserve has a core habitat area of 257 sq. Km. along with a buffer/peripheral area of 484 sq. km. Pench Tiger reserve recorded highest number of tigers in India. Here tigers are in its best natural surroundings and Pench is categorized as a tropical moist deciduous tiger habitat. Pench is very rich in scenic beauty and the floral - faunal diversity. Pench provides a great sighting opportunity of the tiger, leopard, jungle cat, wild dog, hyena, jackal and the civet during the safaris. The park is also the home ground of a large number of herbivores including the sambar, spotted deer, Indian gaur, neelgai, four-horned antelope, barking deerand wild boar.
