Melghat tiger reserve is located in the Amaravati district. It was the first tiger reserve of Maharashtra and it is still one of the biggest tiger reserves in the country in terms of area. This Tiger Reserve is spread over 3600 sq km encompassing the Gugamal National Park. “Melghat” refers to a land where several mountains adjoin. It is hilly terrain of the Satpuda mountain range, with deep forest dominated by teak. What makes Melghat so special is the very interesting undulating landscape. Though this makes sighting of glamorous animals a little difficult as compared to many of the flatter forests, tourists are blessed with a great jungle experience. The Sipna river beautifully weaves its way through the dry deciduous forest. There are different kinds of wildlife species both flora and fauna. Apart from Tigers the other prominent animals are Sloth Bear, Indian Gaur, Sambar deer, Leopard, Nilgais and many bird species.
