Kaas plateau the Valley of Flowers is situated on the high hills of Sahyadri range in western ghats near Satara. Kaas plateau is made from volcanic rocks. The basalt is almost covered entirely by a thin cover of soil formed due to erosion. The plateau is situated at an altitude of 1200 m and is approximately 10 sq. Km. in area. Here various types of seasonal wild flowers bloom and numerous species of endemic butterflies come annually in the months of August and September. Kaas has more than 850 different species of wild flowering plants. Kaas plateau has many rare, endangered and unique plant species, found no where in the world other than this place.
