Raigad Fort

The historical Raigad fort is about 25 km from Mahad town in Raigad district. Although the make of this fort dates back to the 13th century, Shivaji Maharaj took over the reins of Raigad Fort from Chandrarao More, a descendant of Chandragupta Maurya’s clan. Then the fort was expanded and made it into an impenetrable fortress with complete facilities as capital fort. The fort was renamed from Rairi to Raigad. Shivaji Maharaj was crowned king - Chhatrapati of Maratha Swaraj in a lavish ceremony on 6 June 1674 at Raigad fort. He ruled from here after ascending the Maratha throne in 1674 AD. Raigad provides an emotional and historical connect as served the capital of the exalted Maratha Kingdom. The samadhi of Chhatrapati Shivaji and his loyal pet dog, Waghya, are also located in the fort premises. The trek of Raigad Fort with series of 1700+ stairs is amazing. Also ropeway ride is available to reach fort. Tourist guides presents very good catchy narration of the events related to Rajyabhishek and there after stay of Shivaji Maharaj in the fort.
